This report presents a work-based investigation exploring ways to sustain development in an ageing population of teachers. Based on real world and academic research, this work-based project outlines how effective development can be sustained in teaching and its significance in an ageing population as length of service to retirement is increasing. Increased longevity, a projected employment gap and changes to pension age mean that the population of teachers is getting older and developmental needs as well as career management for older workers is seldom discussed. This report will argue that the needs of older teachers are not currently being met and that their strengths and skills are being underused. A lack of focused development targeted at career management in schools puts older teachers at risk of stagnation and loss of productivity will impact on pupil achievement. This research shows that effective development driven by expanded Human Resources functions in schools in combination with scheduled support through collaborative learning activities such as coaching and access to continual learning tailored to the needs and interests of individuals will result in sustained development of effective practice. Working collaboratively with teachers to understand and meet their needs will bring mutual benefit to both them and school leaders and provides incentive for management to strategically plan career-long development in schools.
